Thank you for working to provide us with all of the necessary information for Bamboo litter.

As you are aware we have a big problem with the presence of formaldehyde in the litter.

This situation is new to us and we are trying to understand the nature of formaldehyde in different products and how we determine what is a safe level, if any.

As you would be aware there is a lot of information available to say that formaldehyde is extremely toxic, and restrictions around emission levels in the workplace – which is why we need to understand it’s presence in the litter and the risks to humans and cats health before we bring it to market.

Re: we can understand it and your situation.

I have been back over your emails to review the ingredients information you provided and would like to clarify with you please.

On 2/11/2020 you advised the ingredients as:

70% Fresh bamboo powder

20% Food Grade Guar

5% cassava powder

5% bamboo extract (bamboo vinegar )

Bamboo vinegar could restrain bacteria and fungus.

We use Quinone and bamboo vinegar together to control the bacteria and fungus to decompose the urea into ammonia gas.

And on 2/12/2020 you advised:

Our bamboo cat litter just use the fresh bamboo powder, Guar Gel, a little tapioca and bamboo vinegar

Bamboo contains a unique and special ingredient called bamboo quinone which is a natural Bacteria sterilization.

On 21/4/2021 you advised:

70% fresh bamboo powder

25% Guar gum + cellulose

5% other ingredients

Re: The first testing by HK SGS was failed , so we adjust it according to your request to remove the bamboo vinegar out and make the new ingredients’ sample for the second testing.

Can you confirm please:

1. What is the actual exact ingredient list including percentages for the litter that you have provide samples to us of – there are some inconsistencies in the ingredient lists you have provided over several emails.

Re: we just adjusted the ingredients once for the testing by HK SGS. In the first time we thought that the problem of formaldehyde is caused by bamboo vinegar. So remove it. The final ingredients were 70% fresh bamboo powder +25% Guar gum + cellulos+5% other ingredients

1. Cassava / tapioca / cellulose – which is it please? Or do you use both? As I understand these to be 3 different ingredients. Re: These three ingredients are all used as the adhesion agent, because we removed the bamboo vinegar ,our tech dept should change the percentages of ingredient to keep the cat litter’s clumping performance.

Are they sourced in China and are they food grade? Re: The adhesion agent are all produced in China. I attached the safety testing report of Guar and cellulose for you which is supplied by our supplier.

Can you supply a food grade raw material report on this?

1. What are ‘other’ ingredients – is there something else besides bamboo vinegar? If so what?Re: Because we use the mold to push the material into strip type, so we should add the mold release agent to make it smooth.
2. Bamboo Extract / Vinegar – is the Bamboo Quinone in this or is it in the bamboo itself? Re:Bamboo vinegar is made by distilling while the bamboo burning. Then we will get the distilled water and use equipment to remove the tar out.

Bamboo Quinone is naturally existed in fresh bamboo, which will be destroyed via high temp over 300 degree. Bamboo Quinone is a natural bactericide, so you won’t find one fresh bamboo with wormhole in natural.

Do you have an MSDS report for the Bamboo Vinegar?  Re: we don’t have. Bamboo Vinegar was used by chinese and Japanese for a long time history. Most of the Vinegar are produced by small factory. Because the market is small for its special smell.

Do you have raw material reports for the other ingredients to show them as food grade?

The samples you have sent us / sent for testing are without the bamboo vinegar right? Re: The second samples are made without bamboo vinegar.

As above – please confirm what is the ingredient list without bamboo vinegar please? Anything else added and if not what are the new percentages?

Regarding the tests and formaldehyde:

1. Why did you do tests for formaldehyde in the first place? Is it a customer requirement? Is it common to find formaldehyde in the litter? Re:The Shanghai SGS report was made according to our Japanese customer’s request which is appointed by them. As we showed you that the Shanghai SGS did not test formaldehyde out. The testing method is different with HK SGS’s .

Could you send me the complete testing report of HK SGS? Our Lab of Zhejiang Forestry University will strictly do the new testing of each ingredients one by one same as the method of HK SGS.

What is the standard that you test to for other countries that you are selling to and what are their requirements for formaldehyde? Re: At present we have not explored too many countries. Most of the testing were done by our customers. We just send the samples to them. Then they will test it by themselves. Just like our Italy customer FARM COMPANY SRL. Also they use the same testing method as SH SGS. the testing result is same as ours. So they placed the order to us. But since now we have not shipped the container out for the ocean freight increasing from 2300USD to 7300USD per 20ft container. :<

1. Are there any pesticides or chemicals used in the growing of the bamboo? Re: That’s impossible. Bamboo were widely growing up in nature. Bamboo is similar to the mushroom. They just have one original matrix. So they get the main nutrition from one matrix in a mountain. If you find one bamboo in a mountain start blooming flower and laden with fruit. That means the whole bamboo forest in this mountain will be dead. So we just need to cut the bamboo down every year to keep the original nutrition plenty enough. If there are too many bamboo grows. They will exhaust the matrix and make it to choose blossoming and bearing fruit. Then the new fruit will be falling to the earth and star to breed new bamboo forest.

It would seem to me that there is only two explanations for the formaldehyde result from the test:

1. The test is extracting the naturally occurring formaldehyde (although it was a very high result which makes us sceptical)
2. There is something else in the litter that is causing this result

Re: Pls send us the complete testing report by HK SGS and give us days to testing the whole ingredients one by one according to the same testing method. Also we should make it clear.
